Bits and pieces for a Thursday.

1. admnaismith to the white courtesy phone, admnaismith to the white courtesy phone; you have won an ARC of An Artificial Night. Please email me with your contact information, using the contact form on my website, before Sunday, or a new winner has been selected. Also, I totally need you to come make me a drink, because damn.

2. Evolution is awesome, and more bizarre than you can possibly imagine. The best thing about real life is the way that it doesn't even need to pretend to make sense. Also, it allows for factual statements like "those little hornless males have giant testicles" and "they change their color pattern and rearrange their tentacles in a more typical female arrangement." How can you not love this world?

3. Actually, you know what's better than evolution? Drunken paleontologists being allowed to name the dinosaurs that they have discovered. Yes. Thanks to the glorious power of beer, the chasmosaurine ceratopsid family has a new member: the Mojoceratops. How can you not love this dinosaur?! It has a heart-shaped frill, people. A heart-shaped frill. This is like, Barbie's Dream Dino. Great Pumpkin, thank you for the drunken paleontologists and their glories. Thank you.

4. Remember that I'll be at Borderlands Books in San Francisco, California this Saturday, appearing with the lovely jennifer_brozek as part of the second stop on the Murder and Mayhem Tour. Also, we'll have delicious cupcakes from Cups and Cakes Bakery, because we all know that's really why you attend my book events with such alacrity. Be there if you can!

5. We're less than a week out from the San Diego International Comic Convention, which, this year, I will be attending with Amy McFiddler and the fantastic Tara in tow. So, y'know, that should be a good time, apart from all the flailing and hysteria. I'll be posting my panel schedule early next week, and if you're going to be at the convention, you should totally let me know. I'd love to see you.

6. X-Men: Second Coming is over. Several characters are dead. I'm sad about some of them, not so much about others (and barely remembered a few). I really want them to get Elixir on the business of growing back the various severed limbs, as, well, this is all a bit grim for an X-book. But hey, Jean Grey is still dead, Emma Frost is still pretty, and we still have three Stepford Cuckoos wandering around. So it's hard not to be happy.

7. Other things that make me happy: Warehouse 13, Eureka, Unnatural History, Leverage, and So You Think You Can Dance. Why yes, I am a media whore. Why do you ask?

8. Zombies are love.

9. In addition to the San Diego International Comic Convention being in less than a week, I'm about two weeks out from SpoCon, where a) I'm the Music Guest of Honor, and b) Tanya Huff is the Writer Guest of Honor. DAW GIRLS IN THE HOUSE! We shall wear our Urban Fantasy Mafia colors with pride, yo.

10. The turtle can't help you, but Alice will be happy to shed on you. Just ask her.

What's news with you?

I have a job interview tomorrow morning and I'm scared to death!
Good luck! This economy is rough on everyone.

*I'm back at the crepe mines with BossLady, the crazy French owner. Yay, partial employment! Yay, more entertaining work-related blogging!

*Katherine Whalen from Squirrel Nut Zippers is playing a free concert at Flyleaf (the bookstore literally a 90 second walk from our house) tomorrow night. Kent used to work with some of the guys from the 'Zippers, so this should be a good time.

*My inner-13-year-old is VERY happy after getting to see 'Labyrinth' on the big screen last night. It was the date I always wanted at that age, only I got to drink beer and then go home and grope my "boyfriend" aka the spousebeast. :)

Now...if these allergies would just quit kicking my butt.

I'm envious reading about all these events. I wish you'd come to the East Coast.

Yay, free stuff! I am an absolute coupon slut. My spousebeast laughs and rolls his eyes until I show him the grocery bill...and present him with the 6 pack of his favorite beer that I could afford because of my obsessive clipping.

Yeah, we're food service workers, so we usually drink the cheap stuff. ;)

I've spent the past few days, since driving back from Readercon, plowing through as many Hugo nominees as I can fit in before I head back to work on Saturday.

Has anyone mentioned that you (and Mira) were cited during the panel discussing the year's novels? Feed was recommended "if you're a fan of endings that beat you over the head and take your lunch money", which generated scribbling in the seats around me, at least. :)

...really?

Whoa.

I'm getting my own up close and personal experience with new (to me at least) and interesting infectious disease!

Having pneumonia sucks, but it is interesting from a perspective of SCIENCE.
Just keep thinking of it from a scientific perspective, and don't watch any really funny movies. I nearly choked to death watching Wild Wild West with pneumonia.

Dye class is over at 2, volunteer shift starts at 5:30.... I think I can make it to the Borderlands event, but I dunno! This Tour de Fleece thing is intense.
Here's hoping!

I winz the book? AWESOME!!! Thank you, Seanan, and thank you to everyone who voted for The Cocktail Satyr. This round of drinks is on me!

The Blind Michael
2 tbsp dark brown sugar
1 tbsp molasses
1 shot dark creme de cacao
1 shot Kahlua
Mix in a shaker with ice and pour into a highball glass. Top with Obsidian Stout and garnish with a black licorice stick.

FAE FOLK ONLY: Also add three drops of india ink and sing a verse of Still Crazy After All These Years at the glass.
Does this count as a spoiler - given that the above mentioned has (as far as I can remember) not appeared in books 1 or 2?

Or is this hearkening back to something else entirely?

...why the turtle will not help us....

funny pictures of cats with captions
see more Lolcats and funny pictures
OMG DISAPPOINTED TURTLE!!!!!!!!!!
but Alice will be happy to shed on you. Just ask her.

No thanks - Tally creates enough for any three cats.
Alice is shedding SKEINS OF YARN, I swear.
The Siamese is hellbent on destroying every photography contract I've been writing. Which is a pity, as business is semi-maybe-a-little-bit booming. And blinds. Blinds are her mortal enemy. She's taken to biting if you don't throw the stuffed monkey for her. I'm going to throw the bloody thing away.

Ummm I've listened to nothing but Stars Fall Home since Tuesday. It got me through finishing coding the biggest pain in the rear website I've had to do in a while, and it will get me through editing wedding pictures all weekend! And cleaning! And organizing house before the significant other returns from the oil wells for jury duty!

Also do not attempt to run in 70%+ humidity. You will experience swift death. I'm fairly sure I'm amongst my zombie brethren (and sistren?) now.
Noted.
I'm speaking at Comic Con on Saturday. ^__^ I'm also hoping to make it to your panel on Thursday. Why is it at ten in the morning?!

Are you going to be doing signings this year?

Some people say that Hope is Jean Grey reincarnated. Have you read X-Men (v.3) #1 yet?

Zombies are the solution to everything!

I have no need for Alice to shed, I have Chaucer who is busy shedding and hacking up enough for me.
1) Because the con staff hates your freedoms.
2) Yes, I did.
3) I have, and she's not.

z) Yes, they are.
c) Alice will do it anyway.

I would say "Alice, please shed on me" just to be a smartass, but I get the feeling I'd get an envelope full of cat hair in the mail and instructions on how to properly apply it.
Light hairs on the black velvet couch; dark hairs on your white cashmere sweater, if you please.
Speaking as a paleoanthropologist (close kin to paleontologist, just more anthropocentric), "drunk" is more or less the default state. :)
Awesome.
You've just managed to point me at a new TV show that I've never heard of. This is a Neat Trick. I'll check out Unnatural History at the next opportunity. Thank you.

For SYTYCD (latest musings here), I'm distressed that for the second week in a row, the elimination was determined by injury. My guess is that, had Ashley's injury been minor, Jose would have gone home this week. I can't help but wonder, is it an unfortunate coincidence, or are the choreographers taking advantage of this season's talent level and pushing the dancers harder than ever?

And while I do think Kent is the current leader (though I also see Lauren as a major contender), I don't think he would have beaten Alex.
I really love Unnatural History. And agreed; if Alex had stayed, it was his.

I hope he comes back.
I'll be at Comic-Con, and I'm hoping to be able to make one of your panels.
It was fun!
I have checked your schedule through the Comic Con site.. and I have totally prepared the books for you to sign on sunday.. I will even buy again Feed (I bought the ebook version)(hopefully mysterious galaxy will have some on hand on the convention) for you to sign :)
THANK YOU FOR COMING!!! :)
hehehe I will be carrying the ARC of A local habitation and Artificial Night too... (I bought A local habitation when it was released as well, although I had already read it, LOL, I ordered it through Borderland Books and you were awesome to personalize it for me, they even called me to make sure I wanted it that way :) )
I'll see you next year!
