Okay, folks, I've been asked for it, and here it is: the spoiler party for Feed. Anything goes in the comments on this post only. If you haven't read the book, I ask that you not click. If you have, feel free to jump in, ask questions, discuss, or just yell at me. I'm cool either way.
Agreed. As soon as George mentioned feeling a bug bite her, I knew what had happened. I think my thought was, "But she's the main character!" I should have known with all the tension over each blood test that being the MC didn't make her safe. But I loved that scene anyway. Just the picture of Shaun, with his gun at the base of her neck, watching her write her last update, and the way she wrote out what she was feeling as she turned until all she could remember was his name and that he needed to shoot her...that was awesome writing.
I actually kind of liked that Shaun was able to just shoot Tate and get it over with rather than having to try to bring him to justice through normal channels or anything. Poetic as it would have been to watch him lose himself as the KA amplified in him system, better not to take the risk.
I don't think I'll be able to look at mosquitoes the same way again after reading that.
I realized what had happened right away, and there was a part of me that desperately hoped for some deus ex machina cure or that it really was a bug. The whole scene tore me up and I sobbed for the entire rest of the book. It was kind of hard to convince people that I really loved it when I was all puffy faced and teary.
I think it helps that Feed really is more science fiction than horror. It has a lot of horror tropes, but they wind up presented in a very science fiction way.
I spent that scene cycling between "There's gonna be a cure or something, George isn't really gonna die, she's the main character." and "No, that'd be cheesy. She's really gonna do it."

And yes, I love that poor Shaun's mind can't cope without Georgia, so it supplies her for him.
I'm a little sad that Tate did not get to SUFFER LIKE A WORM for what he did to the Rymans and to Georgia and Shaun.
