Rising countdown: fifty days.

We are now fifty days out from the release of Feed [Amazon]|[Mysterious Galaxy], book one of the Newsflesh trilogy, and my first book writing as Mira Grant. It's my third novel, but thanks to the fact that it's a new genre, a new series, and a new pseudonym, it's managing to feel like my first. Because I needed an extra dose of crazy around here, right?

More seriously, I am, in order, excited, elated, and scared out of my tiny blonde head. I have a better idea of how this game works than I did when I was preparing for the release of Rosemary and Rue [Amazon]|[Mysterious Galaxy], but in some ways, that just makes it more paralyzing—I know what can go right, and I also know what can go wrong. "Mira Grant" may be an open pseudonym, but the genre jump means I'm going to be getting placed in front of an awful lot of new readers, and I wind up praying they'll like me all over again.

Tara has finished the graphic design for MiraGrant.com, and Chris is hard at work getting the CSS we use for my regular site re-skinned to work with the new design. Because I am me, the content will start going live about ten minutes after he gives me the login information. My publisher is one hundred percent behind me, and early reviews are looking good. I still live in fear...but then, fear seems to be my primary motivator, so why change what works?

Um...it really depends on what it is? I don't have time to offer critique, and I'm not allowed to critique (or acknowledge the existence of) derivative works.

2 pages original, just need a thumbs up or down. It's on my LJ under Storms. And gods, no, I would never, ever show derivative fic to the author thereof. That could not possibly end well. Even if you liked it and weren't personally offended, legally, that puts you in a horrible place, and I try to not be cruel on purpose. I don't write fanfic off lit by and large anyway. Not that I don't enjoy your universe, but...I want to write my own things. I'm influenced by what I've read, from you and Emma Bull and Charles De Lint. But I want to write *my* stories. Which, for the record, doesn't mean I love you less.

You'd be surprised how often people write fanfic and then ask the authors (if the authors are online) to give it a whirl. It's...astonishing, really. I have no personal or moral issues with fanfic, but that sort of stunt is what causes authors to request that the stuff be taken down.

Yep. To me, at that point, it's not even a moral issue. You just don't need the legal headache later.

I think it's mean to do that to authors. If the authors don't like fan fic, then they're upset right away. If they like fan fic but yours is lousy, they're both put off by the writing and in a legal bind to say something. And if they like your fan fic, they still have to say no when it's brought to their attention, which seems to me to be even more painful.

And it's okay too if you would rather not. That's why I'm asking first if I am imposing instead of saying, "Yo! Hie thee hence!" ;)

Which I way appreciate, since I have little time for hieing or hencing right now. :( I have six shorts due in six weeks, so I'm going to have to pass for now.

At the risk of sounding weird--because no one here of course is weird--I'm transitioning back into really writing, and I am finding the process somewhat awkward. I'm fairly sure I still have bits of cocoon stuck to my hair. ;)
