It's a movie! Yeah, we're gonna make a movie!

I'm bored, and this is dangerous. So...

Cast your movie version of Rosemary and Rue! Tell me who you'd pick to play the major roles, and why. The cast list I find the most utterly delightful will win a signed ARC of A Local Habitation.

To get you started, here are some main characters to consider:

* October "Toby" Daye
* Sylvester and Simon Torquill
* Devin
* Dare
* Tybalt
* Connor O'Dell
* Danny
* Luna Torquill
* Rayseline Torquill

Game on!

ETA: ...and a winner has been chosen. Feel free to keep on casting, though, this is hysterical!

Do they having be currently living actors, or can this be a Dream Team sort of cast?
Either-or. Currently living would be keen, but not essential.
I am totally squeeing out - went to B&N to get a piece of unclaimed art paid for and claimed and what to my wondering eyes should appear, but a PILE of A Local Habitation sitting on the New Science Fiction/Fantasy shelf!!!!

Naturally, I picked one off the pile and went to the coffee shop and started reading.

Oh, yeah, I paid for it and brought it home, too.

I don't have the book with me, so I'm generally going more with how they "feel" in my head, rather than precise physical description. Besides, certain wonders can be worked with the right makeup and effects people.

* October "Toby" Daye -- Eliza Dushku OR Sandra Bullock
* Sylvester Torquill -- Anthony Stewart Head
* Simon Torquill -- Mark Strong
* Devin -- James Marsters
* Dare -- Dakota Fanning
* Tybalt -- Johnny Depp
* Connor O'Dell -- Andrew Lee Potts
* Danny -- Michael Shanks
* Luna Torquill -- Sigourney Weaver
* Rayseline Torquill -- Dichen Lachman OR Summer Glau
* Evening Winterrose -- Meryl Streep
This.

Curse my inability to pay attention to actors. (That and the fact I don't watch much TV -- I'd hve to go thumbing through IMDB or something...)

(I've rereading R&R now -- if I was feeling ambitious, I could try to produce designs for an animated version by sketches.)
Oooooooooooooooooooooo animated.
I would have to put some thought into most of them, but I think Connor should be played by Jason Segel.

Paterson Joseph for Tybalt.
I had the same thought. In fact, I'm pretty sure that's who I was seeing in my head when I read the books.

I was thinking Andrew-Lee Potts for Tybalt.
Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, Andrew-Lee Potts.

Danny's the Bridge Troll. The BIIIIG guy. I'm not sure Draco Malfoy can play a Bridge Troll.

Since I pay next to no attention to current movie stars, I shall instead ponder the idea of a Bollywood musical version of Rosemary and Rue, or perhaps an all muppet cast.
Now I can't un-see Miss Piggy....

I am a bear of very little brain - headcolds are fun! - but my first thought is Kristen Bell as Toby. Which is probably all wrong, except that she does noir narration so well.
Actually, that's who I always picture.
* October "Toby" Daye - Lena Headey

* Sylvester and Simon Torquill - Tim Curry (yes, he can totally play both roles, he is Tim Fucking Curry people)

* Devin - Nathan Fillion

* Tybalt - Andrew-Lee Potts

* Connor O'Dell - Ethan Embry

* Luna Torquill - Frances McDormand

* Rayseline Torquill - Reese Witherspoon

* The Luideag - Robia LaMorte
No, Nathan Fillion is meant to play "Blind Michael"

* October "Toby" Daye- Toni Collette (I think her facial structure and acting would be great for this!)
* Sylvester and Simon Torquill- Kevin Kline
* Devin- James Caviezel
* Dare- Fairuza Balk (a little old for the part, but when has that stopped Hollywood?)
* Tybalt- Eric Christian Olsen (little young for the part, but I think he could pull off the carefree catlike façade well)
* Connor O'Dell- Dougray Scott
* Danny- Luis Guzmán (with CGI)
* Luna Torquill- Jennifer Connelly
* Rayseline Torquill- Christina Ricci
* Evening Winterrose- Anjelica Huston
* The Luideag- Hilary Swank

Do I get extra credit brownie trays if I completely ignore my RL to-do list and make a "movie poster"?
...you do, in fact, get extra credit brownie trays.

Also, you have been selected as tonight's winner by our panel of giggling judges (and my mother). Please email me through my website contact link to claim your prize.

I've had this wordpad window open literally all day thinking about this. (And also looking up names I didn't recognize from other comments.) :) Chattily:

* October "Toby" Daye - Franka Potente (Lola from Run Lola Run, Marie from the Bourne movies). I think because she's beautiful but slightly off of the "conventional" pretty. Which is how I see Toby. Like, someone who I think is beautiful but who I can believe *she* doesn't think she is. And not quite so fragile-looking.
Or maybe Hilary Swank.

* Sylvester and Simon Torquill - Anthony Stewart Head. Because he can do both trust-me-avuncular and oh-god-oh-shit-you're-evil-aren't-you like woah.

* Devin - John Simm. He could oily his way all OVER that character.

* Dare - Ellen Page. Okay I know she's actually in her 20s, but she played Juno at 20. She could pull it off.
Ooo. Or Emily Browning.

* Tybalt - James Marsters.
Or... actually I don't know that I've seen Andrew Lee-Potts in anything, but I looked up his photos after the other suggestions, and... yeah, he looks like he would do.
Or Johnathan Rhys Meyers.
Or Naveen Andrews.
Or Paterson Joseph (Marquis de Carabas from "Neverwhere", who I also really wanted to be the next Doctor.)

* Luna Torquill - Cate Blanchett.

* Rayseline Torquill - Sara Michelle Gellar, Anne Hathaway, Jennifer Love Hewitt -- someone who at first glance you're more likely to think 'wholesome' than 'evil'.

* The Luidaeg - Mia Sara maybe.

* Lily - Yunjin Kim.

* Quinton - William Moseley. Or Sean Biggerstaff, and Moseley can play Connor.

Oh yeah--
* Evening Winterrose - Elizabeth Mitchell. She's so good at sometimes looking like a complete innocent and other times looking like she has all manner of secrets.
I can tell you did some serious thinking :) nice cast list.

The only one that comes immediately to mind is Stana Katic (from "Castle") for Toby. A little old, perhaps, but the right combination of toughness, vulnerability, and snark.

+1.

in order of appearance:
Toby Daye: Amanda Tapping
Simon/Sylvester Torquill: Hugh Laurie
Oleander: Traylor Howard
Tybalt: Matt Bomer
Evening Winterrose: Shirly MacLaine
Queen of the Mists: Helena Bonham Carter
Dare: Allison Siko
Manuel: Logan Lerman
Devin: Dylan Moran
Luna Torquill: Michelle Pfeiffer
Rayseling Torquill: Kirsten Dunst
Connor O'Dell: Michael Weathery
Lily: Michelle Yeoh

got more people from TV shows than movies :)

Huh. Some fascinating choices!

For some odd reason, when I first saw the title of this, I didn't think of casting at all. My mind immediately jumped to sets, lighting, and how I would do the CGI and SFX if I were bringing your book to the big screen. Hmmm. (You never could tell I'm more into the technical aspects of movie-making, could you? :-) Must be my Tech Theater schooling coming through.)
...that's awesome. :)
October "Toby" Daye: Summer Glau (okay, not sharp-featured but definitely odd-pretty)

Sylvester and Simon Torquill: Jude Law

Devin: Matthew Bomer (charm? Lying liar who lies? Look no further)

Dare: America Ferrera (or Selena Gomez, if America's too old)

Tybalt: David Tennant (I'm half-convinced he's part cat in real life)

Connor O'Dell: Chris Pine

Luna Torquill: Dichen Lachman (kistune brings up Asian imagery for me, and I can see her in the ears)

Rayseline Torquill: Devon Aoki

Evening Winterrose: Tilda Swinton

The Luideag: Pam Grier (she showed up on Smallville recently, playing Amanda Waller. Awesome and fierce.)

Danny: Vin Diesel (mostly for his voice. That's what a troll sounds like:)
Cooooooooooooooool.
I posted earlier with the first things that popped into my head, without really thinking about it. After going home, looking at the character descriptions again, and thinking about it a little more, I'm deleting the old post and recasting.

I hadn't been mindful enough of certain details, like the unearthly beauty of the royals and how they look young, even when they're 900 gorram years old. Which puts me at a disadvantage maybe, since most of my favorite actors have unusual, not traditionally attractive looks and haven't been young for decades. In those cases, I've added an alternate "Time warp" choice, imagining that I could cast, for example, Christina Ricci as she looked a few years after Wednesday Addams, as opposed to Christina Ricci the way she looks now.

Toby-- Emma Watson. This is one I haven't changed, and haven't doubted for an instant. Look...there's even a picture of her already in the role: http://blogs.babble.com/famecrawler/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/emma-watson-death.jpg

Tybalt--Jude Law (seems obvious to me), or Jim Carrey (seems awful at first, until you consider he did The Truman Show and The Mask. Seems to me, a good Tybalt would be a rubber-faced actor mostly known for very athletic physical comedy, but who can also act)
(Time warp choice: Danny Kaye, 1960)

Devin--Paul Bettany. Devin has to be not only dangerous and sophisticated, but able to at least seem convincingly paternal and trustworthy. I crossed off Kevin Spacey and Terry O'Quinn for looks, and David Boreanz because he seemed more like he'd be Devin's bodyguard or something than actually in charge.
(Time warp choice: Mandy Patinkin, around 1985)

Dare--Dakota Blue Richards (Lyra from The Golden Compass)
(Time warp choice: Clare Danes, about a decade ago)

Sylvester/Simon--my first impulse was Liam Neeson for Sylvester and Kenneth Branagh for Simon, and if they get to be fraternal twins, they still seem to me to be perfect for the roles. If they have to be played by the same actor, I'd go with...Neeson, in a coin toss.
(Time warp choice: Ian Richardson, 1980 as both, several years before House of Cards)

Connor--Sean Maher
(Time warp choice, Rufus Sewell, 1990)

Luna--Nicole Kidman
(Time warp choice: Carole Shelley, 1980, or Katherine Hepburn, 1960. I really wanted Shelley. She was born to play Luna, but too long ago)

Rayseline--Amy Acker. Possibly Molly Quinn from Castle.
(time warp choice: Christina Ricci, about a decade ago)

Manuel--Jay Hernandez
(Time warp choice: Jesse Borrego, 1983)

The Luidaeg--Tilda Swinton
(Time warp choice: Vanessa Redgrave, either 1970, or maybe morphing between ages 30 and 70 depending on her mood)

Danny the Troll--Adam Baldwin

Cliff--Marc Blucas. I had him down for Connor at first, but on reflection, he's just not magic enough for the forbidden fae love interest. He is however, an excellent choice for the wholesome mundane husband.

Evening Winterrose--Rita Moreno. For the voice on the phone.

Lily--Dichen Lachman

The Queen of the Mists--Cate Blanchett. It's required by law.

Quentin--Tom Felton. I wanted Rupert Grint, but he doesn't have the looks to be court page.
(Time warp choice: a very young Rowan Atkinson. Think about it.)

Arsebreath the Redcap--Camden Toy

Julie--Jennifer Garner. Her rage while being barely restrained from killing Toby would be terrifying to behold.

Ross-- Adam Sandler, so I can watch him die painfully Oh, all right. Pierce Brosnan.

Doppelganger--whoever played The First on Buffy would be a natural for this.

And...Pepe the King Prawn, as Spike.
Oh, these are some kick-ass calls.

Coming in very late--

I have picks for only a few of the roles, because I haven't yet reread R&R in anticipation of picking up the new book. However:

Toby:
Molly Quinn from Castle, necessarily aged a few years.

If one is trying to visually approximate the book covers, there are two instantly obvious contenders -- Eliza Dushku and Kristen Kreuk (Smallville), but Kreuk doesn't have nearly the acting chops, and Dushku seems to me to bleed too much of herself into her roles. The thing about Molly Quinn is that while she has criminally low screen time on her current series, there are indicators every so often that she has considerably more range than Castle allows her to display. And she does so very well as the no-nonsense Good Girl (Alexis) that I think she'd nail the no-nonsense Damaged Girl that is Toby just as solidly.

As a possible runner-up (and bearing in mind that I've not seen True Blood at all, and so am extraplating far more from her X-Men appearances), Anna Paquin could work well for me.

Devin:
Daniel Radcliffe, probably also aged a few years (but not too much).

As admnaismith points out, Devin's very tricky; his character arc requires someone who can play both as a mentor figure and as an equal to Toby, and someone who has both charm and darkness. Which doesn't necessarily make you think of Daniel Radcliffe -- until you remember his stage turn in Equus. Of the names above that I'm familiar with, most seem to be best known for playing either villains or difficult personalities -- but I think an R&R movie needs a Devin that you don't expect to develop the way his character actually does, and I think Radcliffe as Devin would be both a very strong acting choice and one that would not unduly foreshadow the movie's outcome.

Tybalt, King of Cats:
Neil Patrick Harris.

Here again, admnaismith makes a lot of sense; Tybalt needs an actor with chameleon-like qualities and a degree of zaniness. His suggestion of Jim Carrey and sheistheweather's of Johnny Depp are both well thought of (Depp especially), but both are way too old to play opposite my other choices. NPH is a bit younger, can play younger than he actually is...and, I think, has the acting chops to unveil further layers of complexity in Tybalt's character as the books develop. And I think he'd have excellent screen chemistry with the hypothetically grown-up Molly Quinn.

Danny the Bridge Troll:
Keith David, best known for his voice work as Goliath in Gargoyles.

the Luidaeg:
Susan Sullivan (Martha Rodgers in Castle -- both because it would be highly amusing with Molly Quinn playing Toby, and because I think she'd do an excellent job in the part.
These are some excellent choices.
