Pictures of my work area. It's...enlightening.

I believe that a person's preferred working space and environment says a lot about them. Sometimes it says 'you're crazier than a mad scientist who's just received his electric bill,' but hey, that's still a statement. Because I have access to a camera currently (thank you, Rey) and I like to make sure people know what they're dealing with, I present...

Pictures of my desk.

My desk is a standard issue piece of Ikea modular goodness, with the extra added bonus of having been partially painted with pumpkins and knotwork when I got bored. (This project has been temporarily abandoned due to a lack of boredom. Also due to a lack of viable working space, and because Chris got tired of me asking him to put my desk back together.) The work station is flanked by shelves on either side, with shelves above it for good measure.

The over-desk shelves:

The books on these shelves are a weird mixture of reference and fiction that didn't have anyplace else to go. Almost everything else is better seen in one close-up or another, so I'm not going to bother going into it now.

Close-up of the left side of the top shelf:

Ah, detail. Also, Dagger and Blink locked in eternal battle atop my collection of BPAL bottles. (You can probably tell from the labels that I have a tiny little thing for Halloween. Then again, if you couldn't tell that from the candy corn lights, no force on this world can save you.) Also visible, one of my assorted Halloween kitties, part of Patch the orange and green zebra, and a random malachite penguin. Because I can.

Close-up of the right side of the top shelf:

Behold the glory that is my collection of Howdunnit books! Truly, they are the wonder and the delight. Also behold Geoff the velociraptor, watching you warily from behind the BPAL jungle. You've got a pretty good shot of my candy corn candle here, too. It's candy corn scented, and made from soy, so I can use the wax as moisturizer. My room brings the weird.

These are the shelves to the left of my desk:

My motto in life: you can never have too many dinosaurs. Especially not predatory ones. The T-Rex is Ivory Coast, my designated dino babysitter. Also behold some of my favorite Disney girls. And yes, that is the original Doctor Who roleplaying game.

A wide-angle shot of my corkboard:

Pretty self-explanatory. Now a close-up of the right top:

Behold the adorable wee Mason twins running for their lives from the coming of the living dead!

A close-up of the left top:

The white-eyed Siamese in the picture isn't Lilly; it's Leela, Lilly's predecessor. The tiny kitten in the Polaroid? That's Lilly. Sunrise, sunset...

My fabulous pumpkin teapot and milk jug:

Yes, that's the pumpkin charm I always draw myself wearing. The cord broke, and I need to get it fixed.

ORANGE OCTOPUS!:

Orange Octopus was a gift from Lisa. Behind Orange Octopus, you can see Grey Gargoyle, who was a long-ago gift from Mike.

Here's something random and awesome:

The necklace was a gift from Mia. It's called 'A Curious Fondness for Beetles,' and it's just amazing. I wore it on my trip to New York, for my meeting with my publishers, and they admired it just about as much as I do. In this picture, it's on top of the pile of CDs that I also took to New York. I like that. It's symbolic.

And now, because you've endured so much randomness today, I give you a bonus picture of my cat:

Note that even when she's not on an orange towel, her eyes tend to fluoresce orange. There are many reasons that I love my cat. This is merely one of them. (Also note that this picture gives you a vague sense of Lilly's sheer scale. The classic Siamese is not a small kitty.

Here ends the virtual tour!

Lilly has obviously chosen to cater to your love of orange, but only because it suits her, too.

Lots of fun items. Thanks for the view. I love the pumpkin teapot. That is adorable.
I <3 my pumpkin teapot like whoa.

What he said! ;)

Those howdunnits look interesting - are they US centric, as I'd guess? And there's many a yummy-looking book there... :)

*admires all the pics*

Is it just me, or was Howdunnit's Police Procedural book rather dry and less intuitively-organized than the Private Investigators one? (And Cause of Death, if my memory doesn't fail me, rocked.)

*wishes her workspace were half as organized*sob*
Well, they're all written by different people, so naturally, there's going to be some variation. My favorite remains Deadly Doses, hands down.
Thanks for sharing that... It all helps in getting to know you :D
I am having far too much fun with Rey's camera.
Orange octopus needs to call me.
Orange Octopus is a player.

I love this. I have the same "Howdunit" series on my shelves.
They're amazing and everyone needs them. So says I.
BPAL Pumpkin Patch! I'm wearing one of those today!!
Which one?

Oh, wow. That's all so . . . umm . . . you know, you're SO organized compared to me it's not funny.

Although I too have ponies and BPAL within arm's reach.
My desk Ponies are Little Flitter (not visible in pictures), High Flyer, and Gypsy (UK exclusive).

OCD cat is incapable of not being organized. Twitching results when I try.
Oh my gods Lilly is so cute!

And we have the same method for organizing a bookshelf, i.e. put the books in and then put collectibles and toys onto every leftover surface.
Totally! It uses space in the most efficient way possible.
Wow, cool. Who is the orange tentacled lass next to Ariel?

-Shanta
She's one of the Monster Teens, a set of weird snap-together Japanese toys. I have two of them -- the mantis-girl is on the other end of the shelf.
What does it mean that we have several identical dinosaur toys?
That dinosaurs are AWESOME.

I love the crazy. Crazy serves many purposes, like freaking out those who would rather you be nice and boring and non-writerish.

I love the beetle necklace. And the dinosaurs. (Rrrrar!)
You can't tell from these pictures, but the top of my desk is covered in plush toys. Roughly three hundred of them. Several are dinosaurs.
Leela...did you name her after the Futurama character? ;-)

Can't tell if the animals (real or figurines) are impressed with your collection or not ;-)

Have a lovely day! :-)
The Doctor Who character, actually. Leela of the Sevvatim. When she passed away, several years ago now, she was nineteen.
On the over-desk shelves, in the first posted pic, *someone* is leaning over from the top, surveying its domain. Is it a fox? Is it a bat? Is it undead? Inquiring brains, er, minds, want to know! ;-)
It is, in fact, a coyote face mask brought back for me from Alaska by my friend Meg.
