I need to design a graphic family tree for the InCryptid books, since family is such a central (and unavoidable) concept. Does anybody have any recommendations for ways to do this, or want to help me by putting a tree together? I won't promise to be your best friend, but I will look endearing and mention you in the acknowledgments...
I really just want to do a simple three-generation tree. I know all the relatives that "matter" enough to list. It might be nice to drill back to as much as five for a website extra, but it's not currently necessary.
There are many ways that you can do this. I'd love to help, it's a hobby of mine. Some families fit better into some shapes than others. When do you need it by? I can help but the holidays will slow me down a little. If you send what you have I can play with shapes and concepts and see what you think you like. (this is a book family right)?
It's a book family, yeah. Three generations, all pretty straightforward. I just need to get a simple graphic that can be included in the front of the book.
I would also be happy to help - I'm a designer by trade (or so my clients tell me), and I've done some genealogical work; I can get you print-ready files (or whatever you need) as an end result.
Basically, I need to get a three-generation tree (generation one, Thomas/Alice; generation two, Kevin/Evelyn and Moira/Ted; generation three, Alexander, Verity, Antimony, and Arthur, Elsinore). Very simple.
Sharon is also a genealogist, which isn't an offer, but a note that I've had some exposure.
Genealogical software that's designed to work with real-world families is kind of overkillish for your purposes, since you don't need to record document sources and such. But as something that will allow you to enter a bunch of names and dates, and generate a graphical tree from it, they're great. Here's the first free one that my Googling turned up.
Whoops, I sit corrected. I assumed that Sharon was using commercial software. She is, but she's worked with free ones, and says that the free version of this is the best.
I don't actually need anything that complicated. I have some really random cousins and such, but as most of them aren't actually related (or else don't come up that centrally in book one), I'm good for now with a simple tree.
*puts hand up* I have basically no experience in genealogy or putting a family tree together, unlike your other commenters (accept that as a word already, spellcheck!). However, should you require any interesting 'how they died' or 'how they were born' tales or other scandals, poke me.
Do you want something that looks like this? If so I can either do it for you or show you how to do it. I use Personal Ancestral File (paf), but anything that can create a GEDCOM file will get you a result like the one I'm linking to.
I know at one point, i was looking up family tree programs and had a few demo ones or freeware ones cause i was working on our frat.. but that got too complicated because of our weird ties with one another. :-P
I would look into that though if its just for a book or a regular family, it shouldnt be too bad. :-)
Personally, I'd just use Visio. It's pretty simple and easy for lightweight stuff like that, and the family tree software is likely overkill. But, I'm no genealogist.
If you find any good programs, I'd love to know about them. Most "real" family tree creator thingies are a bit expensive b/c of the cost of research stuff that's built into them. Unless you're into doing your own genealogy, too, I don't think they're worth it. I have used this free chart a few times just for basic visualization, but I don't think that's what you're looking for...
I tried Visio once and it just frustrated me. Then again, if you're not doing seven (Very Full) generations worth of people, it might work out OK.
I think there's a way to do a tree in Black Liquid Story Binder, but I haven't gotten that far with the program yet so I'm not 100% sure.
I've also been trying to convince Hubby to create a family tree program for me forever. If I ever accomplish this, I will be sure to let you know! :)

While basic, it gets the job done. I used it a lot in grad school.
