Word count -- DISCOUNT ARMAGEDDON.

Current stats:

Words: 5,183.
Total words: 73,047.
Reason for stopping: finished chapter nineteen (and started chapter twenty).
Music: my Rose Marshall mix.
Lilly and Alice: flopped on the floor, being deeply endearing.

It's weird and a little scary to think about, but I'm about 30,000 words from the end of the first draft of Discount Armageddon. After I finish the first draft, I'll take about six weeks to let my proofreaders argue about commas, another six weeks to finish a second draft, and then...the book is done. The silly, head-smashing, ass-kicking, ballroom dancing, talking mouse extravaganza that kicks off the adventures of the Price family is almost done. I'm speechless. I'm stunned. And I'm deeply delighted, because finishing this book means setting it free for all of you to read.

The thing about living inside my head is that it's very weird in here, and very cluttered. I sometimes liken my writing habits to my television viewing habits; I sometimes change channels and watch something else for a little while, because some days are Masters of Horror days, and others are So You Think You Can Dance days. Both are totally valid, and totally necessary. Working with Verity and the rest of her wacky, wonderful family recharges me when I'm exhausted from other projects, and vice-versa. They all feed into each other.

Soon all the world will understand the glory of the Aeslin mice, the importance of religious ritual, how difficult it is to dance a good tango, and why gorgons hate wigs. But in the meanwhile, I shall continue to be a little stunned at how far I've come from deciding that Verity Alice Price, daughter of Kevin Price and Evelyn Price-Baker, needed a book of her very own.

Ever since I read the archive of your blog and first saw the mention of the Aeslin mice, I've been very curious indeed. I'm looking forward to findng out more about them. :D
They make me happy every time they show up on the page. It's sometimes difficult to avoid the "all Aeslin, all the time" urges.
Ballroom Dancing? ooohhh, can't WAIT to get my paws on this one!
Yes! As a combat style, even. SO FUN.
GAH! And how many times did I tell my dance partners that ballroom dancing was NOT a full contact martial art??!
Hee hee hee heee...
Yay!
Pleased blonde is pleased.
I cannot wait for this to be published so that I may squee about it far and wide! I love Toby, and I love Clady, but Verity pirouetted in, pressed a gun to my head, and told me she's my favorite.

Also, I want to know if the Aeslin mice accept converts.
It's kind of fun, watching people develop their own favorites amongst my little cadre of locals. I try not to play long-term favorites, if only because I have to work with all of them.

The Aeslin accept anyone who brings cake.
I can already tell I'm going to love DA. To fill a little time while I wait, here are my latest SYTYCD notes. Right now, top of my charts are Ellenore, Legacy, and Jakob. You?
I love-love-love Ellenore and Legacy. I'm pretty put out about losing Peter the way we did. I continue to think that was unfair.
Have you ever snuck into a ballroom studio and listened to an amateur couple getting a lesson from a pro? The question occurred to me when you say 'how difficult it is to dance a good tango', because real lessons are full of 'you didn't swing around far enough' and 'You're in my way' and 'I'm off balance because you're pulling me off', 'run through that again and concentrate on keeping low there' etc...
I've sat in my local ballroom studio and listened to the instructor teaching the students, but I haven't been able to find an amateur couple that was willing to let me listen in. I wish I could!
I'll dig through the old VHS cabinet and see if we have some taped lessons of Betsy and either one of her amateur partners or a pro-am partner with a big-name professional.
