Bits and bobs for an effective Monday.

So today is Tuesday—hooray!—but for me, it's essentially Monday, because I spent the real Monday in a haze of sedatives, painkillers, and other exciting pharmaceuticals associated with having lots and lots of dental work done. I now have two permanent crowns on my upper right rear molars, and can actually eat crunchy foods, like apples and carrots. This is very exciting for me. I'm living the dream, and in the dream, I can chew. (Years of poverty plus a pronounced phobia of dentists mean that I have a lot of work ahead of me. Fortunately, I have a very understanding dentist who specializes in working with the phobic, and who understands that I need to keep my iPod on at all times to keep from panicking when I hear them talking about what they're going to do. Oblivion is my anti-phobia buddy.)

In keeping with the week's established medical theme, I'm going to be spending the afternoon with my doctor, being poked and prodded and (one hopes) declared to be in as good of health as can be expected. This is a necessary first step in scheduling my next spinal epidural, IE, "those periodic injections which render Seanan capable of continuing to walk and interact like a normal human being." It's probably too much to hope that the procedure could happen before OVFF, but I'm guardedly hopeful of shoving it into the week between OVFF and World Fantasy, when I'm already going to be off from work and can thus spend the day in bed without any guilt.

Today is the book-day birthday for The Mermaid's Madness [Amazon]|[Mysterious Galaxy] by jimhines, a gentleman and a scholar if ever there was one. He's also a fellow member of the DAW Mafia, and just an awesome all-around guy...plus the book is amazing. My mother liked it better than she liked the first one, and we all remember how much she liked the first one. I highly recommend The Mermaid's Madness as a good investment of your book-buying dollars for this week. Join the Princess party now, and beat the rush!

I spent a good chunk of Sunday accidentally taking a six and a half mile walk through the cities of Concord and Clayton. I was trying to get to a friend's house for a barbecue, and I overshot by a little bit, assuming you consider four miles, much of it uphill, to be "a little bit." I had never walked some of that route before, so it was educational. I also hadn't walked all the skin off my heels in quite some time, so it was painful to boot. I am now wearing thick socks and bandages, and have no intention of taking that walk again any time soon. Still, it was a pleasant, if unexpected, little adventure in getting to know my home town a bit better. (Quoth a woman who saw me walking by with my iPod on, a Super Double-Gulp in one hand, and a book in my other hand, "Now that's multi-tasking.")

Autumn has arrived at last; I was forced to break out my duvet Sunday night, and woke this morning under a cascade of cats, since not even Alice's innate insulation robs her of the feline desire to snuggle up to the nearest human and leech as much heat as she possibly can. (They promptly stole the warm spot when I got up. This is because they're cats, not idiots.) Next up, umbrellas and the annual hunt for a pair of shoes that I haven't already worn past the point of being waterproof.

And that, for the moment, is that. What's new with the rest of the world?

I get to go to a costume sale! Today! I'm very excited, as demonstrated by my punctuation. Should it prove to be a best, we (my partner in crime for shopping is a fellow mostly-stay-at-home spousal type) shall go antiquing instead. Too many weddings coming up, not enough ideas on/for wardrobe and gifts...
Awesomesauce!
Damn, I already spent my weekly book allowance! Will have to buy that and Stepsister Scheme next week. :) I like Jim Hines, I read his goblin books. They were pretty awesome.

My cat takes up approximately 80% of my bedspace. I don't know how, he seems so much smaller than me.

My cats increase their footprint by adding more stuffed toys to the bed every time I annoy them. I now sleep with two felines and half a toy store.
I'm doing laundry, reading the D&D 4th edition players' manual, and playing D&D again tonight. Yay!

It's getting colder here in Ottawa, Canuckistan, but I'm still eating enormous raspberries from my backyard.
I have never eaten raspberries fresh off a bush. I find this notion...fascinating.

A dentist you can trust is invaluable.
Absolutely. My level of phobia kept me away way too long.
I am getting my gas furnace serviced today, then I am off to the bookstore to get the new Pratchett, I got the Hines last week!
Hooray!
gowan had three teeth removed on Friday after dealing with a nightmarish infection for the month of Spetember. His oral surgeon called us himself to check on him. My husband said that everyone in the practice possesses an amazing bedside manner. He has a long road ahead of him as far as dental work is concerned. The weekend progressed just like the surgeon said it would. My husband actually started his new job Monday after being a long-term displaced worker. This was in large thanks to what happened Friday.

A good dentist goes a really long way. I am so happy you can chew again. Yay for crunchy food.

Did you make it to the BBQ in the end?

I used to have two labs that would do EXACTLY what your cats do.
I did not make it to the barbecue. I wound up calling my mother to come get me after my feet started to bleed.

The rattle that the car dealership didn't fix yesterday got fixed today -- despite me having a surprise chiropractic appointment in the middle of things -- and they didn't charge me! Yay!

Also, can I borrow your chainsaw? I'm bonsai-clipping a 127K thing down to 125K (we won't discuss where it was when I had to use chainsaw and machete), but I need to get its overweight sibling down around the same numbers and I think it may be a little heavy for the machete right now.

I hope your feet and teeth and back all feel good soon!
Noooooooooooooooooooo. I'm using it, get your own. But best of luck in its usage!

Your tale of a day lost to the haze of drugs and dentistry of getting two permanent crowns fills me with alarm, as I've recently found out I need to have 28 done in the next year. At once. However, being able to chew crunchy things is pretty awesome, and being able to chew them without worrying about large pieces of my teeth breaking off sounds like a pretty cool world. Good luck with whatever further work you need!
My case is, for lack of a better word, special. I'm so dental-phobic that I have to take a Valium just to get to the dentist's office, and they keep me on nitrous pretty much the entire time I'm there (so yesterday, that was two and a half hours of gas).

The nice thing about sedation dentistry is admittedly that they can do a lot at once without you giving a fuck. The bad thing is that it really does kill your ability to do anything else that day.
All the best for your shoe hunt. Should you have to go shoe shopping, may you find your size quickly and painlessly :-).

I hate shoe shopping. And need new shoes.
World's. Worst. Combo.

Not to be too geeky, but what kind of umbrella are you looking for? I got a real wild hair last year and bought a Brigg and had it shipped to me from England. Yeah, it's really cool, or as my seventeen year old son says, "Dad, dad, daaaad, that is so un-cool." Which makes me happy.
One that isn't broken. I try to remain a member of the Happy Umbrella Club (any umbrella that isn't black), but I break them fast enough that "keeps out water" winds up my primary requirement.

I had a Sailor Moon umbrella for years. How I loved that umbrella.

Last night was the first night I actually *gasp* used a blanket; up until then, warm jammies and warmer cat and a jersey sheet to keep too much of the heat from escaping have been enough.
Ah, the turning of the seasons and the raising of the heating bills.
Yay for functioning teeth! Eep.

HEE, my heels are very good heels to have, but unfortunately, it's not easy to take long and by long I mean up to 2½ hours. Longer walks than that unfortunately take up way too much time so I rarely do those these days. But I used to go hiking walks in most shoes that are on the market. So I most definitely feel your pain. Blister-plasters (or whatever those kinds of things are called in English) and I are BFFs.

And yes, I love to go exploring in to me previously unchartered neighbourhoods. *geeks*

Though, I prefer to walk in silence with my hands free. But yay, walks! Went for a 35 minute walk earlier tonight, as it happens. :-D
I walk in silence when I want to think; I walk and multi-task when I want to be able to justify taking a two+ hour walk.

I had a fantastic weekend. Went a potluck, a Writers' Bloc (student writing group) meeting, and my first-ever fencing lesson.

Unfortunately the fencing did nothing for a previously-injured-due-to-walking-all-over-campus-with-no-support-for-high-arches foot. I just discovered that walking with crutches is harder than I remember. The last time I had crutches was sometime around ages seven or eight, and I'm eighteen now. But I don't have my bike with me and I can't keep walking to everything or it's going to take months for my foot to heal (or so I'm starting to think).

Hmm. I'm complaining. I should stop doing that. Sorry!

Also, I miss having kitties warm me up at night.
There's nothing wrong with complaining once in a while. And yay fencing, even if you hurt yourself in the process. Saber, foil, or epee?

I was at the library this afternoon and had the bright idea of recommending they add R&R to their collection, only to find out they already had a copy. One branch down, several more to go. ;)
Whee!
I spent my Monday programming. Which is good since it's what I do for a living. And a lot better than what they find for me to do when the run out of programming for me to do.

Good luck with the dentist. I'm told you miss your teeth a lot if you don't treat them properly.
Definitely true. I'm really enjoying this magical "chewing" thing I'd heard so much about.
At present, I am being stalked by an elderly black cat called Ghengis, who is under the impression that the sole purpose of every human in the house is to give him fish, and hugs, and then more fish, in that order. Also, he is trying to weasle his way simultaneously into my husband's chocolate stash and my left-over cous cous. Oh, and I'm writing some stuff.
Old cats are awesome. Your old cat definitely sounds awesome to me.

I would like to inform you that I am using a Rosemary and Rue bookmark while I re-read The Shining.
I think I just had a little geekgasm, I really do.
